Readers of all ages are invited to this special storytime, featuring three authors reading their latest Barefoot picture books: Marilyn Wolpin’s Bring Back the Babka!, Anna Staniszewski’s My Cousin’s Mermaid, and Ruth Horowitz’s brand new Barefoot title, The Midnight Mitzvah. Learn what inspired these stories and what they hope readers will take away, and enjoy a fun activity in our colorful West Concord home. Free.

Ruth Horowitz is the award-winning author of children's books about bats, giant cockroaches, horseshoe crabs, family, friends, and community. She has also worked as a school librarian and a newspaper editor. Ruth lives in Rhode Island, USA, with her husband.

 

Anna staniszewski

Born in Poland and raised in the United States, Anna Staniszewski grew up loving stories in both Polish and English. She was a Writer-in-Residence at the Boston Public Library and a winner of the Susan P. Bloom Discovery Award. Currently, Anna lives south of Boston, Massachusetts, with her family and teaches courses on writing and children’s literature. She is the author of over twenty books for young readers, including the novels Clique Here and The Wonder of Wildflowers; the picture books Dogosaurus Rex and Beast in Show; and the Once Upon a Fairy Tale chapter book series

 

marilyn wolpin

Marilyn Wolpin isn't much of a baker, but she's been known to enjoy a thick slice of chocolate babka. Born and raised in Lakewood, New Jersey, Marilyn was surrounded by attentive Jewish mothers, grandmothers, and aunts who ladled out love and advice in heaping bowlfuls. After a long career in publishing and market research, Marilyn retired to write books for children.

About The Midnight Mitzvah

Hanina Chipmunk knows it’s a mitzvah to help others… but how can she give food to a hungry neighbor without embarrassing her? Inspired by a 2,000-year-old Jewish tale, this story delivers a powerful message about generosity and empathy. When brothers search for their mama’s missing babka in their diverse Jewish neighborhood, they find other delicious treats and words of wisdom from each household instead. Readers can follow clues in the illustrations to solve the mystery of the missing babka in this heartwarming and humorous tale of community members coming together for Shabbat. Endmatter includes information about Jewish cuisine and the 8 traditional Jewish dishes from around the world mentioned in the story, as well as a delicious babka recipe.
